Swede arrested in Bulgaria on Interpol warrant
A 40-year-old Swedish man has been arrested in Bulgaria on suspicions of money laundering and drug crimes.
Officials from Sweden’s foreign ministry have confirmed the arrest.
“The embassy in Sofia has been in telephone contact with the arrested man and is working to ensure he is assigned a public defender,” foreign ministry spokesperson Cecilia Juhlin told the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.
The man, who was wanted by Interpol, was arrested at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, according to Bulgaria’s Focus News Agency, citing information from the Bulgarian Ministry of the Interior.
At the time of his arrest, the man was attempting to cross from Bulgaria into Turkey while driving a truck, Focus reports.
