Sports car maker Porsche is planning to build cheaper versions of its luxury models in an effort to attract more buyers, the magazine Automobilwoche reported Saturday.

Efforts to create a budget Porsche have shifted into high gear after the company was taken over by Volkswagen, the magazine reported, citing Porsche’s head of development, Wolfgang Dürheimer.

Porsche will use Volkswagen’s low-cost manufacturing expertise to develop models that cost less than the €46,500 Boxster, the company’s cheapest model.

The budget Porsche will probably be a small sport-utility vehicle (SUV) that is smaller and differently styled and equipped than Porsche current Cayenne SUV, Dürheimer said. The new vehicle would compete against the Audi Q3 and new BMW X1.

Dürheimer also said that new versions of Porsche’s classic 911, Boxster and Cayman models would be more fuel-efficient thanks to advances in engine-technology and aerodynamic styling. He said the company is also exploring hybrid engine technology and pure electric vehicles though Porsche would first test the technologies and then develop racing models before moving to full-scale production.
