Four dead in house fire
Three children and a woman died and a child was seriously injured in a house fire in Staffanstorp in southern Sweden on Monday night. According to the fire and rescue service each of the family were victims of smoke inhalation.
“We got the alarm around 2 in the morning, and when the smoke divers went in to the house they found five people, a woman and four children. The woman and three children were dead,” said Lars Karsten, district superintendent of Skåne Police.
According to the police, the children were aged from a young child to nine years old. The fifth child is a girl who is around five years old. She is being treated for serious injuries caused by smoke inhalation at the University Hospital in Lund. The hospital described her condition as life threatening.
The fire and rescue service was quickly on the scene after the alarm was received. When the fire officers rang the doorbell there was no answer and they then forced their way in. They found the fire burning in only one of the rooms, but thick smoke had spread throughout the house.
“We don’t know at this stage how the fire started. The fire is out, the area is secured and a forensic investigation is beginning today,” said Karsten.
All evidence at this stage indicates that the woman and children were victims of smoke inhalation. The house was not severely burned when the fire and rescue service arrived on the scene. “Smoke inhalation is the most common cause of death in fires,” said Karsten.
