The two 27-year-old women from Peine and Winsen in the state of Lower Saxony likely died from multiple stab wounds, police said. Details of the murders remain unclear, but police believe the women had some kind of relationship to the man they have arrested.

Witnesses saw the man at the “Machulez” camping area and then later found the two women dead.

More than 100 officers searched for the suspect and arrested him in Peine.

Both women are believed to have visited the camping ground often to overnight in a the caravan of a relative.

Many people gathered outside the campground fence by Wednesday afternoon to watch the police investigation.

“It’s terrible,” one camper said. “My wife heard screams and then it was quiet.”

The incident is the second violent crime at a German campsite this week.

On Monday, police charged a 33-year-old man for the murder of his ex-girlfriend and her parents with a samurai sword at a Coesfeld camping grounds near the Dutch border.

The man’s 10-month-old baby girl was the only survivor of a bloodbath sparked by dispute about paternity and alimony payments that left his 29-year-old ex-girlfriend and her parents dead.
