A 47-year-old man reportedly held up a local bank and fled the scene on foot with a sack of money, shooting at a witness as he fled. The man then jumped on a moped, but was promptly approached by a police cruiser.

An exchange of gunfire ensued, leaving the police officer in critical condition and the suspect dead from a gunshot wound to the head. The officer was flown to a hospital via helicopter and in stable condition, a spokesperson said.

Police have created a homicide squad to investigate the shooting with state prosecutors in Bonn, a spokesperson said.
