The Local's Stockholm nightlife guide: Södermalm

Södermalm is one of Stockholm’s trendiest districts, an expensive area to live, and a clubbers' paradise. SoFo, south of Folkungagatan and east of Götgatan, has a wide range of funky shops, popular bars and restaurants, especially close to Nytorget, a quaint multi-purpose square. In the summertime, outdoor cafés are set up and music events are held here.

For entrace into Södermalm bars and clubs, dress code trends are typically cool, relaxed and funky, as opposed to the smart and sexy theme of bars found in the downtown Stureplan area. Södermalm's music scene tends to be cutting edge and underground - for example, Pet Sounds Bar, one of the most popular bars in the district, is operated by the legendary record store Pet Sounds Records and attracts many guest DJs. Located on Skånegatan, Pet Sounds Bar has more than one floor and offers locally top-rated restaurant cuisine, space for entertainment events and a bar area with mixed drinks whose names come from rock history.

Another Stockholm classic in Södermalm is Mosebacke, where themes vary depending on the night and club. The unbeatable views of Stockholm from the outdoor patio attract many visitors. Most Saturdays the Mosebacke Establishment turns into a concert venue, which features up-and-coming musical artists and concerts headlining bigger Swedish names such as Timbuktu and Bo Kaspers Orkester, providing a little something for everyone, no matter your taste.
