Myrorna, Tomtebogatan 5
Said to be the world’s oldest second hand chain, Myrorna was founded in the late 1800s when two organizations joined forces.
In 1890, the Salvation Army opened their first Stockholm-based shelter on Gamla Stan and started a work programme for men to make money by refurbishing furniture or shoe-making. This concept soon spread to Gothenburg and Malmö, and became a place where ex-convicts and the unemployed were able to find work.
Around the same time, women were running a Christian charitable organization called Myrorna and collected clothes, furniture and house wares for the poor. When they disbanded in 1899, they gave their name to the Salvation Army group working in the same realm.
Now with 29 stores across Sweden and eight in Stockholm, Myrorna is a consignment haven that sells just about everything under the sun: clothes, shoes, accessories, scarves, hats, gloves, art, house wares, books, CDs and porcelain figurines, among many others.
Items are donated and shopkeepers say customers range in all ages and financial backgrounds; they Tomtebogatan location has even had some celebrity visitors (though they won’t say who!)
