The suspected child rapist who turned himself in on Thursday after police went public with their search is a 37-year-old who worked as a waiter in the mountainous Allgäu region, a Gießen senior public prosecutor said on Friday.

After police aired details of their investigation on Wednesday night on the ZDF unsolved crime show Aktenzeichen XY...ungelöst, the man came forward the next day at a police station in Sonthofen, Reinhard Hübner told broadcaster Antenne Bayern.

It was there that the suspect, identified only as Christoph, worked seasonally as a waiter. The rest of the year he worked in the Eifel region leading several sporting groups for boys aged four to 12. Police have not released the name of the town in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Germany's federal police (BKA) took the unusual step of enlisting the public's help amid fears the man was still abusing young boys based on 42 videos that show the man sexually and physically abusing up to nine young boys in different rooms. Investigators believe the videos were recorded in 2006 when the boys were between five and seven-years-old. Previous efforts to find the man, who filmed his deeds and posted them on the internet, failed.

Police estimated that the man’s young victims are currently between eight and 10-years-old, and two were called Marcel and Pascal. Some of the victims may also have been brothers, they said.
