European court halts childrens' deportation
The European Court of Human Rights (Europadomstolen) has temporarily prevented the deportation of four Serbian children from Sweden after their mother was sentenced to eight years in prison as an accessory to the murder of their father, reported Söderhamns-Kuriren newspaper.
The children, who are between the ages of six and fourteen, were taken into the custody of the state in October in Söderhamn on the Swedish east coast. They were placed with relatives in another municipality.
In July, the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket) made the final decision to deport the children to Serbia, despite the fact they have no relatives there and would likely end up in an orphanage.
Many have been upset over the decision, among others Söderhamn municipality, which has submitted a petition to Migrationsverket in protest. Since it is not possible to appeal Migrationverket’s decision in Sweden, the children’s legal representative took the matter to the European Court of Human rights in Strasbourg. The court has temporarily halted the deportation until September 16th.
The court will ask the Swedish government to state its position on the matter and will continue to administer the case. Migrationsverket told Söderhamns-Kuriren it will review the matter once again.
