Motörhead and Saxon headlined the festival under the motto ‘Louder than Hell,’ with music up to 120 decibels booming out across the small village in Schleswig-Holstein.

The Wacken festival bills itself as the biggest heavy metal event in the world, yet it was started by a couple of musicians, Thomas Jensen and Holger Hübner, who still run it today.

“In the first year there were 800 guests, I played with my band and served beer during breaks,” said Jensen.

One couple of metal fans even got married on stage, with the local pastor conducting the ceremony in front of the crowd.
