Bavarian holiday makers heading south via Austria are being warned to be prepared for enormous traffic jams, as a 35-kilometre build-up formed in front of the Tauern tunnel on Saturday.

Drivers are being told to expect waits of up to six hours as the roads are completely overrun and expected to remain so all day.

Holiday makers trying to get to Italy are being told to avoid the highways and try to make their way there on smaller roads.

The autobahn between Munich and Salzburg is already very full of traffic as the Bavarian school holidays begin this weekend and hundreds of thousands of people are hitting the roads.
