The girl, identified only as Corinna, disappeared on Tuesday after leaving her home to play on a nearby playground around 4 pm. Her parents called police two hours later when she did not return.

Her body was found in a mill canal near the Eilenburg city centre and police believe she was the victim of a violent crime, but have not yet determined the cause of death.

“The investigation is at the very beginning,” a police spokesperson said, adding that there are no clues to a perpetrator.

The search for the girl included helicopters, dogs, boats and more than 100 officers. On Wednesday afternoon officers reported “suspicious objects,” and police confirmed they had found the body late on Wednesday evening.

Corinna’s death comes just as the trial for the murder of eight-year-old Michelle from Leipzig is set to begin on August 17. She disappeared from a park on August 18, 2008, and her body was found in a pond three days later.
