Tired of being too old, too flabby and too sick, police officers in Bonn have a new option for getting themselves back into top form: dance lessons.

Already three officers have tangoed their way to better health and four more are signing up for the next round of classes. As many as 400 calories are burned in an hour of dancing.

“It’s being very well received,” Bonn police spokeswoman Dalia Hegerfeldt told The Local. “Those who are taking part in it are enjoying it and having fun – we consider that a success.”

She added that some of the officer’s husbands and wives are signing up with them.

About half of the Bonn police squad is between the ages of 45 and 61. Two of the older police officers caused great embarrassment for the team when a serial burglar outran them to escape - even though he had already been handcuffed.

Police chief Wolfgang Albers hopes to bring a “demographic change” to the group and is leading with example by riding his bike to work every day. More than 100 other officers have followed suit.

“We have to work with the personnel we have but we can improve the basic conditions we’re working with,” said Frank Pontek, another spokesman for the department told the North Rhine-Westphalia regional paper Express.

Other fitness options are already in place for the department and officers can pick and choose what they want to partake in. Police are still hoping for a massage service, such as the one their colleagues in Cologne already have.
