Most parts of Germany remain on severe weather alert Wednesday as meteorologists are calling for heavy showers, strong winds and thunderstorms across the country, with a chance of tornadoes.

“If tornadoes are a threat, we’ll only know on short-notice,” said meteorologist Thomas Sävert.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia was hardest hit by Tuesday night’s storms. Police responded to three fires caused by lightning near the city of Soest. Another call brought them to a farm where 120 pigs perished in their stalls of unknown causes.

Further south in Aachen, a freight train crashed into a felled tree. The driver was slightly injured but it took clean-up crews until Wednesday morning to restore regular traffic along the route.

A felled tree also blocked one lane of traffic on the A1 motorway near Cologne. The city also suffered damaged trees and road signs that were knocked over by the storm.

The states of Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Saxony, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt also reported heavy storms. No injuries were reported from those states.

More storms are expected to move into southeastern Bavaria by Thursday night.
