Wave of reported gunfire in Halmstad

Police suspect a local, criminal gang of being behind a recent wave of gunfire in Halmstad in southwestern Sweden. On Sunday night, a young man was shot at in what was the fifth gunshot-related incident in a week.

The man, who is known to the police, was shot at in the neighbourhood of Andersberg. He was born in 1989.

“We questioned him afterwards. I can tell you that he didn't say very much,” Dan Lewstam, commander on duty, told TT.

The shots were fired from some kind of handgun and police believe that the shooter might be part of a criminal gang, a theory that also applies to the previous incidents.

“That's the theory we're working with. It involves smaller criminal configurations, local gangs that are known to the police for things such as robbery and narcotics.”

Lewstam declined to speculate on the motivation behind the incidents, but said that theoretically it could have to do with trying to scare people or dealing with unfinished business.

Four of the five gunfire incidents occurred in Andersberg, and one was reported in the old town. In four cases, police have confirmed that the shooting took place, but in one case, no bullets, weapons or victims were found.
