90-year-old affirmed right to national transportation service
A 90-year-old Halmstad woman who was denied a car ride from the national transportation service (riksfärdtjänst) to her son's house on Christmas Eve has had her day in court. The court ruled the elderly woman has a legal right to receive transportation assistance.
The service is available to disabled individuals who are unable to travel by ordinary public transportation.
The elderly woman submitted her request to be driven to her son's house in Varberg on Christmas Eve in November 2008. Her request was denied by Hallandstrafiken transportation company, which referred the woman, who is dependent on a walker, to the train or the bus.
The woman appealed the decision to the County Administrative Court (Länsrätten), which right before Christmas found in her favour. On Christmas, she was therefore driven to her son's.
But Hallandstrafiken then took the case to the Gothenburg Administrative Court of Appeal (Kammarrätten) to avoid having to drive the 90-year-old in the future.
The court has now established that the woman has a legal right to receive the national transportation service, reported Hallandsposten newspaper.
