Heavy and constant rain in southern Bavaria has caused road closures amid widespread flooding. A host of rivers haven broken their banks and snow has even fallen in the highest Alpine regions.

Flooding was reported in Upper Bavaria, with the towns of Traunstein, Berchtesgaden and Altötting particularly badly hit. The rivers Isar, Iller, Lech and Wertach broke their banks after nearly 70 litres per square metre of rain fell within 24 hours.

Flood warnings have been issued for areas around the Tiroler Achen, Traun, Salzach and Saalach rivers, while experts say they expect rain and thus further flooding to continue for the next two days in the region.

Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, was covered with 60 centimetres of new snow, taking the total coverage there to 275 centimetres.
