The 58-year-old entered an Uppsala gas station just before midnight and threated staff with a machete.

“It wasn't a robbery. We have classified it as making illegal threats and attempted assault,” Magnus Rova of the Uppsala police told TT.

The man fled the scene by bike, but was then discovered behind a fence shortly thereafter by one of the police dog handlers.

“The officer tried to persuade him to come out and to disarm him, but was unsuccessful. Instead, the arm man came at the officer, threatening with the machete, as well as verbally,” Rova said.

The officer fired a warning shot, but was then forced to shoot the 58-year-old in the leg.

The “machete man” was arrested and transported to the university hospital for medical care.
