Two people have died after a small aircraft crashed on the runway shorty after takeoff at Midlanda airport in Sundsvall in northern Sweden on Monday morning.

The accident occurred after two Swiss-registered two-seater aircraft took off from Midlanda in quick succession. Both were bound for Skövde in the south of the country.

"The pilot in the rear airplane reported shortly after take-off that he was having engine problems and wanted to return to the airport to land. Just then the plane toppled over and fell to the ground from a height of between 100 and 200 metres," said Lars Grantinger from the Gothenburg flight rescue centre.

The accident took place shortly after 10.30am.

"The crashed plane fell on a grassy surface around 100 metres to the right of the runway. Our rescue services arrived at the site of the accident very quickly," airport manager B-O Lindgren told news agency TT.
