Surprise victory for Nordqvist at LPGA Championship

Anna Nordqvist, who turned 22 last week, became the fourth Swede to win a golf major with her surprise victory at the LPGA Championship on Sunday.

Nordqvist made her first major championship as a professional a memorable one as she fired a four-under 68 to win the LPGA Championship.

Nordqvist finished at 15-under 273, four shots ahead of Australian Lindsey Wright.

After seeing her five-stroke lead shrink to one, Nordqvist drained a 12-foot birdie putt at the 14th, then all but sealed the victory with a 35-footer for birdie at the next.

“Of course it's a fantastic feeling and I think that it will take several days for it to sink in that I have actually won. It has been an incredible week,” Nordqvist said after her victory yesterday in an interview with event organizers.

“I don't think it has really hit me yet that I have won a major. I just tried to focus on what I needed to do. There isn't anything I do about what the other players do on the court.”

Nordqvist, who began playing golf at the age of 13, had made the cut at the Women's British Open the past two years as an amateur. She will advance to the US Open at the end of August.
