The Local's guide to Germany's best beer gardens heads up north for a cold brew.

Hamburg is pretty far removed from Bavaria both spiritually and geographically, so perhaps it's no surprise the city's beer gardens are sometimes a bit different. But even if gravel and trees are often replaced by sand and sun umbrellas, the maritime charm of this Hanseatic town encourages us to cut it some some slack.

Schuhmachers Biergarten

They call it the prettiest sunset in Hamburg: at the head of the Stadtparksee (City Park Lake) sits Schuhmachers beer garden, a lively waterfront venue complete with beach club and party room. Named for architect and city planner Fritz Schuhmacher, this location features a popular public pool with bank reinforcements dating back to 1910. The space has operated as a beer garden since 1998, while the ajoining beach club opened more recently in 2005. There's even a covered party room available to rent, in case you're worried the North Sea weather may not co-operate on the day of your special event.

Factory Hasselbrook

But Hamburg also has a traditional beer garden contender in Factory Hasselbrook. Situated around an abandoned train station, this cosy establishment won't charge you an arm and a leg for a "null-fünfer". That’s not to mention the bar staff’s reputation for being especially pleasant.
