A tornado south of Schwerin caused millions of euros in property damages on Thursday evening, but no one was seriously injured, police reported.

The twister hit just south of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania capital in the county of Parchim, tearing off roofs and rendering several homes uninhabitable.

One elderly woman there was treated for shock.

One community called Plate sustained damages to 63 homes and other buildings, in addition to 17 vehicles. Police estimated on Friday that costs will be at least €3.5 million.

The German Weather Service said it was not sure how the tornado formed.

“We had no indication there would be a cyclone or a tornado through our own measurements and observations,” a meteorologist said, adding that weather conditions at the time, which included hail and high winds, made such an event “absolutely plausible.”

Meanwhile heavy winds and rain in the neighbouring county of Nordvorpommern uprooted trees and flooded streets, police reported.
