Stockholm hotels in royal demand

Stockholm's hotel rooms are already in short supply for the weekend in June 2010 when Crown Princess Victoria weds Daniel Westling. Travel firms are betting on a summer tourism boom for the capital.

The couple announced in March that they intend to tie the knot in Stockholm on June 19th 2010.

Travel firms were not slow in responding to the announcement and it is reported that it is they that are behind the recent boom in hotel bookings in the capital in connection with the royal wedding.

"Victoria's and Daniel's wedding is huge. We think that are great many ordinary people want to travel up to Stockholm to watch," said Jonas Sturzenbecker at ResZander AB, a travel firm based in Kalmar in southern Sweden.

ResZander AB has booked hotel rooms to house 10-20 bus loads of well-wishers, a total of up to 1,000 people.

Many firms did not wait until the wedding date was announced.

"We made our bookings the same day as the engagement was announced. There were a series of factors which leaned towards June 19th. Since the wedding was announced the prices of hotel rooms have shot through the roof," said Sturzenbecker.

Most of Stockholm's hotels have received bookings from Swedish sources, but some have even noted an increased interest from overseas.

"There are a number of German operators which have booked rooms," confirmed Olivia Dahlström at the Elite hotel chain.

Where the wedding guests will be housed is as yet unconfirmed. It is not even decided how many there will be, according to Marianne Bonbeck at the Royal Court.

"One does not know. Wedding preparations are in their infancy," she explained.
