Two young men are thought to have drowned after a post-beer garden swim in the Isar river in central Munich on Saturday afternoon.

They jumped head-first into the water at the bottom of a waterfall according to eyewitnesses.

And although they then surfaced again, a strong current prevented them from swimming back to the bank.

Police say a 26-year-old was pulled unconscious from the water by his girlfriend and a passer-by, but he could not be revived.

A search was continuing on Sunday to find his 28-year-old friend who jumped with him into the water. He is expected to have also drowned.
