Witches out in force for Visby Easter parade

A record number of witches came out to play as Visby on Gotland played host to its traditional Maundy Thursday march.

2,953 brightly dressed people of all ages joined the march, which has been held in the centre of Visby for the past 30 years.

Witches, hags and warlocks galore dressed up to the nines in feathers, willowy twigs and daffodil buds, were on display as the march began from Stora torget and continued to Södertorg in the centre of the city.

It was not just the children that joined in the dressing-up fun, and claimed an Easter egg as a reward for the effort.

"I dress up for the children's sake," local resident Roger Ekström told news website helagotland.se.

Last year's march set a world record and the organizers of the march, local Visby businesses, were happy to report that this record had been broken for the second consecutive year.

"The Guinness Book of Records has now removed the record, but we continue anyway," toy-seller Magnus Christiansson told the newspaper.
