The 34-year-old woman and her 59-year-old mother were found dead in an apartment in Halmstad yesterday. Police believe the man to have shot the women and then turned the gun on himself.

Police have received information that the man, who was married, previously had a relationship with the younger woman. Expressen reports that his wife discovered the crime scene after knocking on the victims' door.

She knew her husband was going to visit his ex-girlfriend, and became worried and went to the apartment. When no one answered, she looked in through the mail slot and saw the man's body in the hallway.

Police called the family's son to open the door, and the two women were found dead in the kitchen. The father of the family was in the bedroom when the shots were fired, but has suffered from a stroke and has been unable to communicate.

The gun was found next to the man, who was still alive but unconscious.

The 45-year-old suspect remains in critical condition at Lund University Hospital in southern Sweden, where he was rushed after being found in the apartment.

“We managed to stop the bleeding and he will now receive a new catscan,” hospital representative Per Längby told TT.

Following an operation, the man was transferred to intensive care in the hospital's neurosurgery unit.
