Olsson was sentenced on June 5th 2007 to ten years imprisonment for serious drugs offences and drug smuggling. On sentencing he requested to be placed in a facility that afforded him the chance to study.

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service (Kriminalvården) ruled in October 2007 that in accordance with his request, Olsson should be placed in Kumla, a high-security correctional facility near Örebro in central Sweden.

Having been given the chance to study, the courses that Olsson has completed include financial criminal law and legal courses in business and management economics.

By March 30th 2009 Olsson had managed to accumulate 277.5 ECTS points. A normal full-time study year would amount to 60 points.

Olsson is therefore studying at thrice the speed of a regular student and has been admitted to distance-learning courses at universities in Halmstad, Gävle, Linköping, Luleå, Lund, Sundsvall, Stockholm, Uppsala, Växjö and Örebro.

Olsson has studied several courses within law subjects covering tax, property purchase, contract law and debt collection. He has also completed courses in family law, legal method, art, human rights, logistics and organisation theory.

University education is tuition free in Sweden and there is no limit to how many courses a student can pursue. Andreas Olsson becomes eligible for parole on July 23rd 2013.
