Activists jailed for weapons sabotage
A man and a woman have each been sentenced to four months in prison for the sabotage of 14 grenade launchers during a raid on the premises of Saab Bofors Dynamics in Eskilstuna in central Sweden.
Anna Andersson, 27, and Martin Smedjeback, 35, broke into broke into two facilities associated with weapons manufacturer Bofors in October.
In its ruling, Eskilstuna district court found that Andersson and Smedjeback had broken into a protected zone and damaged grenade launchers worth a total of 900,000 kronor ($107,000).
The activists belong to Avrusta (Disarm), a branch of the Swedish 'Ofog' network devoted to nuclear disarmament and demilitarization.
In a statement, the group said the pair had "disarmed" the weapons launchers by hammering and scratching them.
Avrusta claimed the action marked its dedication to the official Swedish policy of not supplying weapons to warfaring nations.
"It is my duty to intervene due to the gross criminal damage and death that Saab causes around the world. Others who get in the way of Swedish weaponry, for example in Iraq and Afghanistan, pay a substantially higher price," said Andersson.
