Probe into Malmö police racism reopened
Prosecutors in Malmö have decided to reopen an investigation into racist remarks made by police officers during disturbances in the city’s Rosengård neighbourhood in December.
Last month, prosecutors decided not to pursue an indictment against three police officers who had used racist terms when speaking about young people being pursued by police on the night of the unrest.
The comments came to light later when a police video was presented as evidence in a court case against one of the alleged ring leaders for the unrest.
In the film sequence, officers use make a number of racist and threatening remarks.
“You little monkey son of a bitch. Should I make him sterile when I catch him?" said one police officer on the tape.
"Yeah, he’s going to get beat so well that he won’t be able to stand on his own legs," answered a colleague.
Now Peter Hertting, chief prosecutor at the Malmö development centre run the Swedish Prosecution Authority (Åklagarmyndigheten), has opted to review the decision to drop the initial investigation, reports Sveriges Radio (SR).
Hertting plans to investigate whether or not the three officers could be charged with agitation against an ethnic group.
