Netball club sets new goals in Sweden
Sweden is something of a haven for indoor sports, with floorball already established as a popular institution. Netball on the other hand has yet to grip the popular imagination, but a new club in Stockholm is doing all it can to take the sport out of the shadows.
Netball. It’s a sport that you either know or you don’t. The Brits, Aussies and Saffies out there will remember it as the dominant sport at school for females, whereas the Swedes and most other Europeans will take a stab in the dark and guess it’s somewhere between basketball and dodge ball.
Australian Heather Main thought she would clear this confusion up once and for all and founded the Stockholm Netball Club early last year. When work took her back to Australia in November 2008, she passed the reins over to Anna Cottle and the club now has over 20 regularly attending members.
“It’s grown into something pretty big,” says club captain Cottle.
“We have an intense eight week programme on loop with three teams who play against each other each week. The top two teams play against each other in the eighth week at a public match where anyone can come and watch. This is a good way to spread the word of the sport too.”
As well as all this, the Stockholm Netball Club has been invited by the Mayor of Copenhagen to play in Denmark, not only representing Stockholm but Sweden as well, as part of a festival officially recognising netball as a sport in Denmark.
“This is a really big deal for us,” says Cottle. “The club has been working so hard and they really deserve this. The main reason for our public matches is to raise money for travel, accommodation and kit for this match and our future.”
The club is looking for corporate sponsorship and believes it could be beneficial for investors.
“Our future holds a lot of traveling abroad and international companies could do well in sponsoring us, especially when they have branches in other European cities,” says Cottle.
The club would appreciate any help and looks forward to seeing visitors at their next match on March 18th at 7.30pm at Karolinska Institutet.
