Swede wins World Cup skiing classic

Swedish skier Anders Södergren claimed victory in the 15 kilometres Nordic skiing classical style race in Valdidentro in Italy on Saturday.

Södergren beat Norway's Jens Arne Svartedal and fellow Swede Johan Olsson in the race, the last World Cup event before the 2009 world championships.

The achievement was all the more impressive as the Swedish skier had missed the start of the season with a suspected tumour which was eventually found to be benign.

With that scare behind him he resumed competition and this was the 31-year-old's second win of the season.

World Cup overall leader Dario Cologna of Switzerland retained his place at the top of the standings despite only finishing in 19th here.

The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships will take place in Liberec in the Czech Republic from February 18th to March 1st.
