Weather service Meteomedia reported the Alps in south are suffering heavy snowstorms which will will move west and northwest by midday due to strong winds. Meanwhile temperatures will remain between -1 and 4 degrees Celsius.

The snow will ease intensity but stick around throughout the week. On Thursday the western and southern portions of Germany can expect a bit of sunshine through clouds and flurries, but northeast of the Elbe river the snow will continue. Temperatures on Thursday will be slightly colder than the day before.

There will be heavy cloud cover and snow flurries on Friday, but the west and northwest may have brief bouts of sunshine, Meteomedia said. Temperatures will continue to drop to between -3 and 2 degrees Celsius.

The snowstorms in the state of Bavaria caused accidents and jammed traffic on the A3 motorway, but police said there were no injuries. Fire department workers were out in full force throughout the night removing stranded trucks from motorways, and portions of the road were closed entirely, police said.

Hundreds people were forced to spend the night in their vehicles on the road between Frankfurt and Würzburg because of snowy conditions, forcing the Red Cross to round up tea and cookies for distribution, news agency AFP reported.
