A German man faces the death penalty in Taiwan after being apprehended with 2.4 kilogrammes of heroin at Taiwan's Taoyuan International Airport, officials on the island said on Monday.

Customs officials discovered the narcotics in the 38-year-old’s luggage when they checked a suspicious looking package.

“He refused to say who gave him the heroin or where he was delivering it,” a police spokesperson said.

But strict laws in Taiwan mean that the man now faces the death penalty and the Deutsches Institut, which acts as an unofficial proxy there, has sent a lawyer to represent the man.

Germany doesn't have official diplomatic ties to Taiwan because it adheres to Beijing's one-China policy. The Chinese government considers the democratic island a renegade province.
