Women on the pill have a higher incidence of asthma than other women of a fertile age, according to a study involving Swedish researchers.

According to a Nordic-Baltic study, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, asthma is 40 percent more common among those using contraceptive pills.

"We do not yet know if the link that we have discovered has a true causal connection, that is to say if the pill causes asthma," cautioned Christer Jansson, professor at the lung and allergy clinic at Uppsala University Hospital to Upsala Nya Tidning.

Janson is one of those responsible for the study which is built on surveys of living habits and health from around 5,800 women between the ages of 25 and 44 in Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Janson underlines that he does not consider the evidence to be strong enough to recommend against the use of contraceptive pills even if the risk of asthma should be shown to be somewhat heightened.

"Unwanted pregnancies are considerably more dangerous to health than a somewhat higher risk of asthma."
