STOCKHOLM

Cinemafrica Film Festival

The ninth Cinemafrica film festival opens this week and features 26 films from 16 countries across the African continent over its 11 days.

Highlights include the comedy "Sex, okra and salted butter" by Chad's Mahamat Saleh-Haroun about an African family living near Bordeaux. Furthermore Zina Saro-Wira's "This is my Africa" is to be warmly recommended, as is Katy Lén N'Diaye's documentary "Awaiting for men".

The bi-annual Fespaco festival coming up in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso at the end of the month has ensured a bumper year for African film.

Price: 40 kronor for the festival pass plus 65 kronor per film

Justin Townes Earle (US)

More Americana at Södra Teatern, this week in the shape of folk and blues storyteller Justin Townes Earle.

Being the famous son of Steve Earle gave him a head start but with his second studio album "The Good Life" released in 2008 his music surely holds its own.

Earle will also play at Malmö's Babel on Tuesday, February 10th and Gothenburg's Pustervik theatre on Wednesday, February 11th.

Price: 135 kronor

Cheap eats at Stockholm's finest restaurants

Melker Andersson is Stockholm's equivalent of Gordon Ramsey, but with less of the swearing.

His restaurants - Fredsgatan 12, Le Rouge, Kungsholmen and Smak på Restaurangen are some of the city's finest eateries. And for the next month at least, a gourmet feast can be had at a price even mere mortals can afford.

There are also eight other popular restaurants participating in the "Eat Sweden" scheme. Don't forget to "Pass it on" Stockholm.

Cullberg Ballet - Position of Elsewhere

The internationally renowned Cullberg Ballet is back, and with a world premiere, at Dansens Hus this weekend.

"Position of Elsewhere" is choreographer Johan Inger's second full work following up his critical success "Point of Eclipse" in 2007.

Price: 270 kronor, half price for those under 26

GOTHENBURG

Eurovision Song Contest

Yes, it is that time of year again - the first national Eurovision Song Contest heat of Sweden's "Melodifestival" comes to Gothenburg's Scandinavium this weekend.

Shirley Clamp, Emilia and Alcazar are just a some of the bevy of stars that will open the road to Moscow, and the 54th Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in May 2009.

Bollywood exhibition

What with Danny Boyle's suburb film "Slumdog Millionaire" gaining plaudits worldwide, it seems only natural that Gothenburg's Museum of World Culture would launch a Bollywood exhibition.

Films, dance shows and real Bollywood stars and singers, help you to find answers to what has made the Bombay film industry just so huge.

Soundtrack of Our Lives

The Soundtrack of Our Lives is a Swedish rock band formed in 1995. Their third album "Behind the Music" gained them widespread recognition in the USA.

The band has followed up its early success with three further studio albums, the latest of which, "Communion" arriving at a bit torrent near you in November 2008.

They are also friends with the surly Manchester gang, Oasis, and toured the US with them in 2002.

Everybody Gets Lonely Sometimes

Malmö's only club where you can shake your hips to live music opens for the season on Friday.

The "Everybody Gets Lonely Orchestra" will help you to beat off those grey January "I don't get a half-term" blues with a rich blend of instrumental soul and rhythm n' blues.

The orchestra is made up of members from The Ark, Cardigans, Tummel and more. Very Booker T & the MG's.

Dead Man Walking

Dead Man Walking is a gripping tale of guilt, punishment, revenge and forgiveness.

Malmö Opera's performance of the Heggie opera based on Helen Prejean's book of the same name is performed in English with Swedish subtitles.
