A working party within the Christian Democrats, one of the four parties making up the Alliance coalition government, has suggested the novel plan to help newly married couple deal with the pressures and expectations of marriage, according to a report in Svenska Dagbladet (SvD).

Almost one in three children in Sweden is from a broken home and 50,000 children are involved in a divorce each year, according to statistics from Save the Children Sweden (Rädda Barnen).

"We want to improve the possibilities for parents to stay together," explained Anders Sellström of the Christian Democrats to SvD.

The party will submit an interim report next week where it will be argued that counselling is the best way to "encourage family stability".

County councils currently have an obligation to offer family counselling but the party wants to extend this obligation to providing a free check up to encourage Swedes to seek help.

"This is a way of saying that it isn't shameful to ask for help," Sellström said.
