Police are investigating the incident as a racially motivated hate crime.

“We plan to report it as serious assault with a racial signature,” said police spokesperson Tobias Jöhnemark to the TT news agency.

The 41-year-old man had just stepped off a bus at the intersection of Örstigsleden and Herrhagsvägen around 4.45pm on Sunday.

He reported that five people then came up to him and started shouting insults based on his background. The man didn’t react to the verbal abuse, and continued on his way.

Suddenly, he was hit from behind with a baseball bat or similar object. The same five people continued to hit the man until he lost consciousness.

After what he estimates was about five minutes, the man regained consciousness only to discover the assailants had fled the area.

The man was taken to hospital in Nyköping bleeding heavily.

“He has an injury to his nose, wounds on his back and shoulder, and on one hand,” said Jöhnemark.

The man claims he didn’t recognize any of his attackers.

The police’s suspicion that the matter is a hate crime was also strengthened by the fact that nothing was stolen from the victim.

Police continue to look for people who may have witnessed the attack.

“We have nothing to go on,” Jöhnemark told TT.
