Dismissal notices reach historic levels

Redundancy notices reached near record levels in Sweden during the last quarter of 2008, as 57,000 people were given notice by their employers.
"Only once in history has this been surpassed, and that was October to December 1992," said public employment agency Arbetsförmedlingen in a statement.
"Compared to December 2007, the number of people given notice has multiplied," the agency said.
In December, 18,000 people received notice, compared to 2,000 in December 2007.
By the end of the 2008, 188,000 people were registered with the agency as being unemployed, an increase of 27,000, or 0.5 percentage points, on the same period the previous year.
The number of people working with various forms of supported employment totalled 77,000, a drop of 16,000 compared to the same period in 2007.
