Number of part-time auto workers to soar

The number of auto workers forced to accept reduced hours could rise to as many as 300,000 in the coming months as the financial crisis takes hold in Germany, industry expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer told daily Bild on Tuesday.
Workers pushed into part-time positions could triple by spring, the auto industry expert from the University of Essen-Duisburg said.
According to the federal employment agency, some 93,979 part-time auto workers were registered for December 2008. But Dudenhöffer told Bild that due to the "dramatic position" that shorter days would be a "theme" for all of 2009 for auto manufacturers.
