Coach Eric Gerets on Monday had indicated he was confident of landing the 37-year-old Swede, while additionally chasing Shakhtar Donetsk's Brazilian star Brandao.

But a Marseille statement said that "the club has decide to end discussions with Henrik Larsson over his coming to Marseille (while) respecting the wish of the Swedish striker to take his time over reaching a decision.

"However, Marseille cannot wait any longer to learn his choice and will now follow up other leads."

The Swedish international veteran has just finished the season with Helsingborg and Marseille had been interested in a six-month loan, rather along the lines of the Swede's arrangement two seasons ago when the former Celtic and Barcelona star had a brief spell with Manchester United.

The French club, fifth in the table six points off leaders Lyon, need a forward badly with Mamadou Niang having fractured his foot.
