When 70-year-old walker Rolf Lindh saw car tracks ending in a hole in the ice on Storsjön near Sandviken in central Sweden on Tuesday, he feared the worst, Aftonbladet reports.

Lindh called the emergency services and coast guard divers were able to locate a car under the ice and conclude that it was empty except for a pair of shoes.

"The signs are that two people managed to get out of the car and get to dry land, one clad only in stocking feet," Lindh said to Aftonbladet.

Police were mystified by the find until the car was identified as a 170,000 kronor ($22,000) 2004 Audi that had been reported stolen on Boxing Day.

The owner of the car, a women living in Sandviken, reported to the newspaper that she had only owned the car for two days when thieves broke into her home, stole the keys and made off with her saloon car.

Police have appealed for help in tracking the thieves. Witnesses confirmed that they had seen a car out joyriding on the ice on Tuesday night.
