Doctor keeps licence after oral sex with patient
A 44-year-old doctor who performed oral sex on a male patient at a Stockholm hospital in 2007 has been allowed to keep his licence. The doctor has instead been given three years probation by the Stockholm Medical Responsibility Board (HSAN).
The Local reported in October that the doctor's career appeared to be in serious doubt after the National Board of Health and Welfare reported the case to the board with the recommendation that his licence be revoked.
"He has clearly behaved in an unsuitable manner by having sex with the patient, even if the latter did go along with it. He has shown himself completely inappropriate to continue working as a doctor," Staffan Blom of the welfare board said at the time.
HSAN has however taken a softer line and argued that as the doctor has not been convicted of any criminal offence there are insufficient grounds to strike him off the register of accredited physicians.
The physician has previously been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing by Solna District Court.
The doctor explained to the committee that he bitterly regretted the incident and that he had been over-worked and suffering from a great deal of stress at the time.
The case dates back to an incident at a Tensta clinic on October 29th 2007. The physician was examining a young male patient at the clinic for a kidney stone complaint when the patient developed an erection.
The doctor then performed oral sex on the man, causing him to ejaculate.
The patient immediately regretted the incident and received help and support from staff at the Tensta clinic. The doctor was then arrested and escorted from the premises by uniformed police.
