By comparison, 2,397 were made redundant in the whole of December 2007.

The new figures come on the back of news that in both October and November almost 20,000 were made redundant per month.

Unemployment figures are also showing a steady climb. At the end of last week 175,215 people were registered as unemployed with the agency. This represents an increase of 4,061 in comparison with the previous week and 19,839 more than the corresponding week of 2007.
