Police have held the former head of internal security for Deutsche Telekom since last week on suspicion of breach of trust in an ongoing spy scandal investigation, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on Wednesday.

The paper reported that the Bonn public prosecutor secured a warrant for his arrest as one of the "top suspects" in a case against Europe’s biggest telephone company that has scandalised the nation.

Klaus T., as the paper identifies him, was head of internal investigations for company security in Bonn until 2006 and is suspected of organising surveillance of conversations between high-ranking employees and journalists. The actions were allegedly carried out to discover the source of press leaks about Telekom.

The telecoms giant has acknowledged that such incidents took place in 2005 and “probably” in 2006 as well, and has ordered an internal probe of the affair.

Deutsche Telekom has also been plagued with data privacy scandals, with reports of sensitive customer information, including bank details and birth dates, leaking on the black market several times in recent months. Some customers have even complained of illegal withdrawals from their bank accounts.
