Braving temperatures of minus 15 Celsius, a man in the small village of Kristineberg, about 50 kilometres north of Lycksele in Västerbotten climbed up in a tree on Wednesday afternoon hoping the retrieve his cat, which had been stuck in the tree for several days, the Aftonbladet newspaper reports.

Upon reaching the cat, which was perched on a limb about 13 metres high, the man became gripped with fear and found himself incapable of making the descent, at which point he called emergency services.

Normally, Swedish emergency crews don’t respond to calls about cats stuck in trees, but when a person is also involved, they are quick to react.

“It was kind of a funny assignment and certainly out of the ordinary. Once he was way up in the tree, the man didn’t dare to come down,” said emergency worker Torbjörn Nilsson to Aftonbladet.

By the time emergency workers arrived on the scene, the man had been stuck in the tree for at least 30 minutes.

But with some skillful maneuvering of the fire truck’s ladder, crews were able to lower the pair to safety.

“First we took down the cat, then the guy,” said Nilsson.

“Everything ended well.”
