Police inspector Göran Lindgren stood accused of stealing a a video game worth 995 kronor ($129) and notebook computer worth 4,995 kronor from an ICA Maxi store in Enköping, west of Stockholm, on the evening of August 29th 2008.

Lindgren admitted the offence under interrogation and revealed that he had sold the game on an internet auction site for 400 kronor and confirmed that he had also intended to sell the notebook.

The police inspector had made use of a self-check out system at the department store to first register the goods for payment and then void the items. He was thereby able to pass through the check out without paying for the goods.

Lindgren's employers, the Uppsala County police authority, argued that his actions could have damaged the integrity of the police force.

"For a police officer to conduct his duties it is of the utmost importance that he has the confidence of his employer as well as that of the public. As a consequence of his actions this confidence has been lost."

Furthermore Lindgren had been absent from work without a legitimate reason from July 7th 2008 until the offence was dealt with by the police authority on October 27th 2008.

Lindgren was sacked on December 1st by the National Swedish Police Disciplinary Board (Rikspolisstyrelsens Personalansvarsnämnd) with immediate effect. He has been given two weeks to appeal.
