Wild boars cause motorway pileup
A herd of wild boars caused a massive car pile-up on the B26 motorway in Hesse on Tuesday morning, police in Darmstadt reported.
The group of animals, or sounder, which crossed the lanes of the B26 motorway towards Darmstadt in the early morning hours, caused an 11-car pileup. Police estimate damage will ring in at about €85,000.
Though there doesn't tend to be much traffic on the B26 at 5:25 am, one of the boars was struck by two cars. The cars that followed managed to swerve around the furry foresters, but skidded out and hit the crash barrier or drove into the roadside ditch.
Three men were slightly injured and eight of the 11 cars had to be towed.
The wild boar hit by the cars was euthanized. Police in Darmstadt assume that the rest of the sounder managed to run off into the forest unharmed. Hunters where asked to search the area for evidence.
Last month the German Hunter’s Association (DJV) reported that some 23,000 wild pigs became road kill last year – up by a third from 2006.
