Swedish layoffs reach historic highs
Nearly 20,000 layoffs were announced in Sweden in November, the highest number of redundancies the country has seen since November 1992.
According to new statistics from the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen), 19,907 people were told in November they would be losing their jobs.
The figure for October was 19,500.
At the end of last week, 163,739 people were registered with the agency as unemployed, 980 more people than the previous week and an increase of 19,193 compared with the same week last year.
The number of people on supported employment stood at 77,958, a reduction of 36 people from the week before, and a drop of 16,080 from the same week last year.
At the same time, 79,390 people were participating in employment support programmes, an increase of 1,461 people compared to the previous week and an increase of 13,541 from the comparable week last year.
During the week, Swedish employment offices added 7,771 new jobs, an increase of 393 from the previous week, but 6,520 fewer new positions than the same week last year.
