Police have classified the case as a suspected kidnapping and have appealed for witnesses.

The girl is reported to have been abducted in a dark blue BMW car by a bus station in central Haparanda - a town of less than 5,000 inhabitants and located 1,000 kilometres north of Stockholm on the border between Sweden and Finland.

Police confirmed that they are aware of a witness to the abduction but had by Saturday evening not managed to contact the person.

"We have only the first name of the witness," Mikael Norén of Luleå police said to news agency TT late Saturday evening.

The young girl's mother reported her daughter missing on Saturday evening.

The Swedish police have informed their Finnish colleagues and the Swedish customs and excise.

"But we don't know if the car drove into Finland or whether it remains in Sweden," Norén said.
