STOCKHOLM

International Film Festival

The 19th Stockholm International Film Festival reaches its climax this weekend. Steven McQueen's Hunger, Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom, Duane Hopkin's Better Things and Courtney Hunt's Frozen River are a few of the films competing for the festival's equivalent of the Palme d'Or, the Bronze Horse.

Wong Kar Wai and Charlotte Rampling are this year's guests of honour.

Price: 220 kronor for the obligatory festival card and then from 50 kronor/film

Frida Hyvönen

When she released her debut album Until Death Comes, Frida Hyvönen made an instant impact on the Swedish music scene and an instant impression on the music media.

She has been compared to a young Joni Mitchell and has an intensity and fragility which hints of Tori Amos. With her recently released third album Silence is wild Hyvönen deserves to be judged, and judged well, in her own right.

Frida is also playing at Stadsteatern in Gothenburg on Saturday and the Palladium in Malmö on Sunday.

AMOUR, ACIDE & NOIR - Daniel Léveillé (CAN)

Canadian choreographer Daniel Léveillé describes the vulnerability of the body in his performance Amour, Acide & Noix which premieres at Dansens Hus next Wednesday.

Amour, Acide & Noix is danced by four naked dancers. The work has been stripped of all aesthetics and props - all that remains is pure movement.

Stockholm International Horse Show

The event promises a whole load of action over its three days in Stockholm's Globe arena.

Featuring both two and four-legged Olympic medallists the event has attracted a host of world class equestrians with their trusty steeds.

Dressage and driving, jumping and spectacular shows are on offer as well as a Christmas market with a horsey theme.

GOTHENBURG

Melissa Auf der Maur (CAN)

Canadian rock goddess Melissa Auf der Maur has collaborated with The Smashing Pumpkins, Ryan Adams & Rufus Wainwright among others and was the bassist in Hole for five years.

Her self-titled debut solo album came in 2004 and the follow up Out of our minds will be released in the spring 2009.

On Saturday Melissa brings her flaming red locks and energetic bass riffs to Gothenburg's Brew House.

They call us bloody Lapps - Kompani Nomad

In this performance dancer and choreographer Ola Stinnerbom takes a look at Swedish racial biology and what it has meant for the Sami people. Stinnerbom underlines the importance of being yourself - whether Swede or Sami.

Stinnerbom, in a production by Sweden's only professional Sami dance group Kompani Nomad, has sought inspiration from new circus and mixes ecstatic dance with acrobatics and Sami lyrics with an added spice of mime and comedy.

Gary Louris & Mark Olsson of The Jayhawks (US)

Louris and Ohlsson have been flirting with each other artistically for some time. They collaborated together on Ohlson's comback album The Salvation Blues - his first since the break up of his band The Jayhawks.

The pair will release a joint album "Ready for the Flood" in January 2009 and they are in Gothenburg on Thursday to try out material and give an indication of whether they can fit their billing given they are described in some quarters as the Lennon and McCartney of the 2000s.

MALMÖ/LUND

Christina Branco (POR)

Fado's greatest global exponent, Cristina Branco, comes to the Palladium in Malmö in Friday.

Her lyrics express love, longing, happiness and pain and her music, in tune with her Portuguese folk music genre, is an intense all-consuming experience.

Manhattan Transfer (US)

If you fancy a trip down nostalgia way, then The Manhattan Transfer at Malmö's Concert hall might just be the ticket.

The vocal group was formed in 1969 in New York City, released one album and then

split up to reform in 1972, remaining in its current form today.

The Transfer mixes jazz, big band and popular music styles and their music has featured in a raft of movies including 1993's "Swing Kids".

When We Dead Awaken - Ibsen

The Unity Theatre in Liverpool has joined forces in a international cooperation with Riksteatern and Västerbottenteater to present Henrik Ibsen's final dramatic work, When We Dead Awaken - in English.

The story follows ageing sculptor Arnold Rubek and his beautiful young wife Maja. Arnold has lost all interest in the world around him and despite his wealth, fame, and the attentions of his wife, he can find no joy in his existence.

Suddenly he is jolted out of his stupor by an unexpected reunion with Irene, a model who once posed for him and whom he idolized.

Josette Bushell-Mingo, who has worked as a director and actor with the Royal National Theatre, the RSC and the Manchester Royal Exchange, has assembled a cast of English and Swedish artists to tour Sweden as an extension of the 2008 European Capital of Culture programme. The tour ends in Lund this weekend.
